Jesus instructed Believers to take the message of hope and the ministry of transformation to “the least of these” (Matt.25:40). I have preached the gospel on five continents and have not found anyone who better represents the “least of these” as sex workers in Africa. Thousands upon thousands of young African women have entered sex work to provide food for their children. They are desperate to leave the bondage of sex work but do not know how. Their stories are heart-wrenching. Some entered sex work due to an unwanted pregnancy brought about by rape. Most entered sex work because their parents forced them out of their homes in shame. They are outcasts in their communities. They are spurned and ostracized. Most churches and pastors refuse them entrance to their gatherings.
Jesus was called a “friend of sinners” (Matt.11:17; Luke 7:34). We may never be more like Jesus than when we minister to and care for sinners and “the least of these.” I have been a pastor, church planter, missionary, seminary professor, and denominational leader. However, nothing has given me a greater sense of being like Jesus than ministering to these unfortunate ladies. When you do it to “the least of these,” you do it unto Jesus.
There is a place for you to make a life-changing contribution to sex workers in Africa. ATRM invites you to be a significant contributor to this effort. There are no small roles; click the “Get Involved” tab to see where you fit in. Whether you are a concerned individual, business influencer, or church leader, there is a place for you. There are signs that God is beginning a transformation movement across the African sex industry. You can be a part!
I did not choose this ministry; God chose it for me. Perhaps God is choosing you. Will you pray about God using you to bring transformational rehabilitation to the “least of these”? You may be God’s answer to the countless number of prayers of African children who desire better for themselves and their mothers. I know you would be an answer to my prayers. Thank you, and may God bless you for your concern!
In January of 2022 God opened the heart of a Kenyan pastor to the plight of sex workers in Kenya. Pastor Dickson began a ministry to prostitutes. With little resources he gathered 11 sex workers to study the Bible and he encourage them to leave the sex industry. Pastor Dickson led the sex workers in two Bible studies each week for three months. At this time, he reached out to Dr. Randy Wood, his former seminary professor and then Senior Pastor of Liberty Baptist Church of Fayetteville, Georgia. The two of them joined forces to impact these 11 young “Special Ladies” with the transforming power of the gospel. Pastor Randy enlisted two ladies from his church to teach the weekly Bible studies and discipleship classes. The ministry occurred over the course of seven months. Funds from members of Liberty supported the 11 “Special Ladies.” Monies were donated so each Special Lady could begin a modest business; most sold products on the open market. The ministry was very successful. All 11 Special Ladies completed the seven-month program and the overall purpose was reached. It was not an easy seven months, yet the Lord did an amazing work.
Since the pilot program, additional groups have formed in Oyugis, Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Nakuru, Kenya. Individual Believers and churches have partnered to reach sex workers all across Africa.
From these humble beginings the African Transformative Rehabilitation Ministry (ATRM) was birthed. American Christians and churches partner with African leaders to bring transformational rehabilitation to young women caught in the sex industry.
